Roadworthy Certification: What it means, and how to get your vehicle certified.

Roadworthy Certification is the process by which a vehicle is presented for an inspection at a registered and graded Vehicle Testing Centre whereby a qualified Examiner of Vehicles will test the vehicle according to the National Road Traffic Act and South African National Standard and if satisfied that the vehicle is roadworthy, he or she will certify the vehicle as roadworthy. The person presenting the vehicle for inspection will thereafter be issued with a roadworthy certificate (NRW). This certificate will be valid for 60 calendar days from the day of the inspection.

When is it required?

Roadworthy certification is required when: there is a change of ownership of a vehicle, the motor vehicle is reconstructed or altered, the motor vehicle or trailer was built up from parts and needs to be registered or when a motor vehicle has been issued with a notice to discontinue operation (Section 44) by a traffic officer and is subject to a full roadworthy test.

In the case of minibuses and heavy load vehicles such as trucks and trailers (GVM exceeding 3500 kilograms), an inspection needs to be done on a yearly basis in order to receive a roadworthy certificate (COF) whereas buses require this every 6 months.

What will you need in order to get your vehicle inspected?

You will need to take the vehicle along with your ID card/book or a valid driver’s license to the testing centre, fill in the required form with your details and pay the fee required for the class of vehicle being inspected. Our friendly staff will be glad to assist you.
